Safe spaces

An old teenage favourite song playing on the radio
The stories narrated by an old friend
A plate full of nostalgic food on a slow afternoon
The sunlight falling in your favourite spot at home
The bougainvillea you’ve painstakingly nurtured through the years
The sound of wind chimes on a hot summer day
The comfort of the covers of your bed
Ringing sound of your phone with your special person ringtone
Your table at your favourite café for a regular coffee fix
The bartender bringing your usual instead as you sit
Intimate conversations at wee hours in the corner of a winter party
Traversing an old route you took everyday to school while navigating
The comfortable silence sitting next to your partner
Inside jokes with siblings and knowing looks in family gatherings
A rerun of your favourite sitcom on Sunday
Wearing that soft, faded tshirt that needs to be thrown away
Safe spaces are everywhere
In places, people, thoughts, feelings and senses
As we wander to find new horizons
We hold on to this sojourn to find our bearings again
